Many people think of pitching their own camps in Ladakh and sleeping under the stars in Ladakh and while we do not blame them, it definitely isn’t a cakewalk. Ladakh camps range from uber-luxurious to basic. Whichever one you choose, we definitely advise spending at least one night camping in Ladakh. Below is our list of suggested campsites for nature-lovers and adventure enthusiasts.
OUR FAVOURITE CAMPS IN LADAKH
INDUS RIVER CAMP
The Indus River Camp is a 40-acre natural sanctuary on the banks of the Indus river. 7 kilometers from the city, the only buildings in sight here are the monasteries perched on the mountains that surround it. They have 3 riverside cottages, 2 riverside tents and 3 riverside cabins with double beds and bathroom and a restaurant with 2 full-time cooks.
Recently renovated, the dining room has separate tables for guests and there is always a table waiting for your party size. There is also a nice area with soft seating for relaxing and reading while gazing at the mountains.The food is excellent. Mary and her sous chefs deliver delicious food that leaves you wanting more. Dishes are made based on what is freshly available in the local markets. Even their bread and butter is made on site!The fire pit is an excellent addition where guests gather after dinner and hosts, Nico and Mary join in. They also have a huge telescope for stargazing and looking at the moon, a must-do in Ladakh.
The camp is set amidst a stunning setting and one keeps wanting to return. You will not find room service for laundry facilities here. This is a family and locally run campsite, albeit an upmarket one, and does not try to be anything else.
HIMALAYAN LUXURY BIVOUACS
With more than a decade in the tourism industry, Himlayan Luxury Bivouacs is a registered resort under Ladakh Tourism Association, J&K. Think luxury at an altitude of more than 10,000 ft. in The Himalayas. Each Himalayan Luxury Bivouac is built on an area of 700 sq.ft with fully furnished antique handcrafted furniture. Sheesham and Teak Wood furniture, handmade tassel silk curtains, brass fittings make for a perfect blend of aesthetics & elegance.
Located in a quaint and picturesque village Shey (approximately 10 km from Leh), the trees and mountains make for a beautiful setting. The hospitality of the team is incredible, to say the least. The team is extremely polite and friendly and accommodating of requests. The entire setup is systematic and well maintained.
The tents are built on a large area surrounded by trees and are not less than a luxurious (as the name suggests) hotel room with sufficient comfort and modern amenities. Hot water and sumptuous food make the experience even more comfortable and worthy of great memories.
CHAMBA CAMP
Located at a distance from the town, Chamba Camp claims to provide luxury services and accommodation to the guests.
On one side of the camp is the beautiful view of snow-capped mountains and on the other, of the Thiksey Monastery. The cottages are done up exquisitely with an African feel to them and come with butler service. They organize activities like morning prayers at the Monastery, archery, market visits, etc.
We recommend the Chamba Camp for people who would like to get an experience of Glamping in Ladakh. However, there are many other options to explore if you are looking for the same at a better price. Though the camps have all sorts of luxuries, we feel that it fails to capture the Ladakhi soul. But if a glamorous take on camping is what you seek, look nowhere else!
