Ladakh is spread over a vast geography and is quite unlike other hill stations like Manali or Shimla or Darjeeling. It’s dry, barren, it’s usually cold and the sun can be extremely harsh on your skin. Besides the air causes extreme drying of the skin. Most people are uncomfortable for 2 days after they arrive in Leh
Despite all the challenges, it’s still a beautiful Holiday to explore & experience Ladakh. Ladakh is not a sit at one place and drink destination.
So if you are looking to just go and drink, then perhaps look for an alternate destination
Some of the key requirements of a family is less hours on the road as most are not so comfortable sitting for long in the car. While some families won’t mind longer drives. I’ll try to list out recommendations based on my experience and different preferences that I have observed over the years
A Leisure Trip for Families
This is the basic trip and recommended for someone with limited time. You arrive in Leh and fly out of Leh covering popular destination like Nubra and Pangong in your trip. We do spend a day covering popular Leh local sites.
This trip is for minimum 6 days and here is the detailed itinerary for this trip
This trip can be done from April to October and even in winters
In May and June, please do note that due to summer holidays certain areas will be quite crowded for example, the Leh Market, Hunder Sand Dunes, Khardung La, Chang La
My sincere recommendation would be to add a village experience to this trip to get a glimpse of real Ladakh. The possible options are
- A day visit to Turtuk Village to experience the Balti Tribe
- Visit the villages of Dah and Hanu to experience the descendants of Alexander the Great, the pure Aryan Race
- The Nomadic Tribe of Changthang Region of Ladakh
