9 Sensational adventure activities in Rishikesh

Rishikesh is known for its spiritual significance, Rishikesh is dotted with temples, ashrams, meditation retreats and yoga centers. At the same time, this small town is also home to some of the most thrilling adventure activities in the country. Rishikesh is well known for the plethora of adrenalin-fuelling experiences that it offers and some of the best adventures in Rishikesh are listed below. Go river rafting in the Ganges, rappelling in the Himalayas, take in the setting sun after a trek up a hill. Be sure to indulge in as many of them as you can!

Adventure activities in Rishikesh –

1. RIVER RAFTING

River rafting is an activity almost synonymous with Rishikesh. The 37 km long flowing Ganga at the foothill of the Himalayas makes the location perfect for this. There are ample opportunities along the river for both novices as well as seasoned rafters. The Kaudiyal route is for most advanced rafters, with about 13 major rapids. It takes about 8-9 hours ( 3 to 4 hrs ) . The route from Brahmapuri to Rishikesh is well-suited for beginners/families with grade 1-2 rapids. The most popular ones are Shivpuri down but we highly recommend marine drive down for thebest experience. Rapids in Rishikesh have names, for example – The Wall, Three Blind Mice, Good Morning, Roller Coaster , Golf Course , Body Surfing to name few popular ones. A trip to Rishikesh is definitely incomplete without a river rafting experience.

2. BUNGEE JUMPING

Rishikesh is now home to the highest bungee jump in the country. The jump point is around 25 km from Rishikesh. At a height of 83 meters, looking down from the jump platform is sure to give you goosebumps. The sight of the mountain rocks and gurgling water below make the adventure even more thrilling. Without a doubt, bungee jumping here is one of the safest in the country and a must-do if you can muster up the courage.

3. GIANT SWING

If you couldn’t get over the bungee jump and need some more adventure, go for a round of the giant swing. Conducted at the same place, this activity involves a free fall from the jump platform and then swinging between two cliffs. The upswing proffers great views of the lush greenery and that may almost be enough to stop you from screaming. We said almost.

4. FLYING FOX

As the name suggests, this activity involves ‘flying’ over the Ganges. Generally done in groups of 3, the activity involves being attached to a harness and zipping through strong cables. Starting from 120m, the journey takes you down to almost just 7m above the river at a crazy speed of 140 kmph and then pulls you back again. If you’ve always wanted to channel your superhero, then buy a cape and get on this ride!

5. RAPPELLING & ROCK CLIMBING

Rock climbing is an activity most of us are acquainted with. However, not many can boast of having done it in the picturesque setting of the Himalayas. Rishikesh has many operators conducting this experience for people of all experience levels. So whatever your fitness level, give this fun activity a try and climb up a mountain. Come down by rappelling, i.e. using a harnessed rope or similar equipment. The operators conduct introductory sessions for people, so make the most of it and try your hand at it!

6. WATERFALL RAPPELLING

If rappelling wasn’t challenging enough for you, try the unique experience of waterfall rappelling! The rope is strapped on to your body and the descent is coupled with the incessant stream of water hitting from above. The experience is unlike any other and will definitely be one to boast about. Look at the image below and tell us you don’t feel the adrenalin pumping.

7. KAYAKING

Second only to river rafting, kayaking is the next most popular activity in Rishikesh. The Ganges offers some great rapids for all levels of expertise. Just choose the right one for your skill level and combined with some basic instructions, you’re good to go. The river offers great stretches for this activity and also some very picturesque views while at it.

8. PARAGLIDING

Nothing quite beats the thrill of flying through air, feeling weightless like a bird. Paragliding in Rishikesh will make you forget all your worries while you soar through the air. A powered parachute driven by an experienced pilot will take you up in the air and give you a bird’s eye view of the enchanting town. See the river glistening in the sunlight or the many temples lining the ghats, the greenery all around or the mighty Himalayas. You may be soaring in the air for a while but your spirits will soar for quite some time even after you’re back on the ground!

9. TREKKING

Sitting at the foothill of the Himalayas, Rishikesh is full of trekking opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. October-March is the perfect time to go trekking and one can chase waterfalls or take a trail up to a temple. These treks are short and offer a close encounter with nature.

10. MOUNTAIN BIKING

If trekking on your feet is too mainstream for you, try mountain biking. Certainly not for beginners, this activity involves a fair amount of dexterity and fitness. There are off roads and tough terrains to negotiate over and one will find no dearth of challenges on the way. Add to that the spectacular views and this definitely promises to be an experience to write home about.

Thank you very much to you and your team for arranging this fantastic tour. One of the best pick from this tour was your meticulous planning and promptness of service. All arrangements were fantastic, be it a delivery of vehicle at Chandigarh airport, hotels particularly at Chandigarh, Leh, Nubra, Pangong. However the best was at Jispa, Kargil and Srinagar for different reasons. Jispa was simple but authentic with very tasty food.

Sunil, after I ran 21k Marathon I bragged about it for years. The same is being repeated again, with my ambition to drive across the Himalayas, which was almost faded with Srinagar under curfew. You and Chetan were the spark to our fire that we could do this drive and without a single trouble. Driving is a passion but driving thru places where there are no roads is trouble, but your breakup of program and awesome car condition helped us actually sail thru. Three cheers and five stars.

Thank you Sunil and your team for our one of the best experience in life you have provided us.

Eight of us from Sri Lanka got Sunil to arrange a self driven tour to Leh and we are very happy with our decision. He was punctual, trustworthy and met our expectations. The service provided was very professional. As foreigners it’s hard to arrange such a tour by ourselves and Unwind outdoor filled in the gap perfectly. All places we stayed were nice and decent. Should specifically mention about the two Scorpios which we instantly fell in love with. They were very well maintained ...

After days of research, we finally came across a facebook page called ‘Unwind Outdoors’. It seemed like our dream was going to be finally true. Very reasonably priced and Sunil from Unwind was like a know-it-all person.

The itinerary was so crisp and so very well laid out that there was no reason for us to worry other than coping up with nature’s fury.

Six of us (two families) travelled to Leh in Jul / Aug 2015 and we had an excellent experience with Unwind Outdoor. From the very beginning of our excited planning phase, Sunil has been willingly suggesting us options, number of days, places to visit etc. He has all the knowledge of the terrain, passionate about trekking and traveling himself, so he understands travel-crazy people such as me and my quirks.
We landed in Leh in time for cloudbursts and flashfloods and landslides (along with mud and rocks sliding too). Despite Nature's fury, Sunil and Skarma made sure we were utmost safe and comfortable. These guys are just not into travel business, they help people fulfil their travel dreams. Truly! Go guys!!
